Mitsubishi Electric announced on October 21, 2026, that it had developed a machining system enabling humanoid robots to work seamlessly with CNC machine tools. Described by the company as an industry first, the system uses physical AI to perform tasks traditionally handled by machine operators, including workpiece setup, equipment cleaning and disassembly.
The company plans to deploy the system in 2030, with the aim of substantially reducing labor requirements in machining operations. That schedule separates the development announcement from planned deployment: the system’s intended labor savings remain an objective rather than a demonstrated production outcome.
The development is relevant to the manual work surrounding machining. By assigning setup, cleaning and disassembly to a humanoid robot, the proposed system could reduce the number of steps that require an operator’s direct involvement. Its practical value would depend on whether the robot can complete those tasks reliably and coordinate them with the machine’s operating sequence.
For manufacturers assessing this approach, a central question is how consistently that coordination can be maintained across different workpieces and operating conditions. If operators need to intervene frequently, the reduction in labor demand could be limited even when individual tasks are automated successfully.
Further details on task coverage, intervention requirements and performance in sustained operation would help establish the system’s production value ahead of the planned 2030 deployment. The announcement supports a direction toward automating more of the work around CNC machining, while the scale of the resulting labor savings remains to be demonstrated.
